Mobile Data Protection

Not a week goes by without news of another lost laptop or
some sort of data compromise affecting hundreds or even millions of clients or employees. To maintain compliance
with data privacy legislation, organizations must publicly
report any security breach – such as computer theft – that is reasonably believed to have compromised personal information.

If an IT department has the ability to remotely delete sensitive data on missing computers and produce an audit log of the deleted files, the organization is able to demonstrate proactive and thorough laptop security practices. A remote data delete option for missing computers can help an organization avoid damaging publicity, litigation or other costs, from regulatory fines to expensive customer communications, such as mass mailings to explain a data breach, or credit monitoring for those affected.

Protect Your Data – and Your Organization's Reputation

As organizations open up their networks to mobile workers, contractors and even customers, they expose themselves to greater security risks. It is critical to be proactive and identify vulnerabilities in network security before a security crisis occurs.

Save Money, Save Face

With Computrace®, IT professionals can track fixed, remote and mobile computer assets and remotely delete sensitive data on target computers that have fallen outside their jurisdiction. Computrace can remove data at the file, directory and/or operating system (OS) level, helping customers meet strict regulatory compliance requirements and ensuring computers are left clean and free of sensitive data. Computrace can also be used for lifecycle management to ensure that computers are wiped clean at end of life or lease.

Case Study – William Penn University

“We had a real problem with laptops not being returned to the College after students withdrew from their programs without graduating. Our investment in ComputraceComplete® is helping pay for itself by the incentive provided by the remote Data Delete function,” says Curtis Gomes, IT Supervisor, CWA, William Penn University. “We can perform any number of reports and operations remotely with ComputraceComplete, from deleting the My Documents folder to removing the operating system, which effectively disables the computer. We’ve only had to do this a few times, however, because word got out pretty quickly that we could do this, and now this particular problem has all but disappeared.”

Data is Permanently Removed

Computrace Data Protection uses a Data Delete algorithm that meets the United States Department of Defense standard for data removal. Once removed, data cannot be recovered by any means. When a Data Delete completes, a log file can be viewed in the Customer Center website, confirming that all sensitive data has been deleted – helping companies comply with data protection regulations.

CPR: Compliance, Protection, Recovery

By adopting the CPR approach to laptop security, organizations can minimize the impact of computer theft, while complying with privacy regulations. Computrace helps ensure regulatory compliance by protecting data, tracking hardware, providing auditing capabilities, and acting as a historical record of computer assets.

  • Compliance – Complying with all applicable mobile data protection regulations, with an easily accessible audit trail
  • Protection – Protecting data on mobile computers includes encryption, strong authentication and the ability to remotely delete sensitive data on stolen computers
  • Recovery – Recovering lost or stolen notebook computers ensures that they are returned to the control of the organization and prosecution facilitated.

If you have been lucky, your organization may have avoided the need to remotely delete data on a lost or stolen computer but how long will your luck last? Why gamble with your organization’s good name?
