Computrace for Netbooks

If you have netbook computers within your deployment, you've joined the wave of organizations that see the value in supplementing their existing IT assets with these smaller, single-purpose devices. Netbooks contain a simpler configuration of hardware versus what you would find with a traditional computer and offer organizations the capability to provide a straightforward internet connection to casual users.

Although netbooks are a less expensive, simpler option, they require the same level of diligence and care when it comes to security and theft prevention. Computrace® for Netbooks by Absolute® Software provides you with the technology you need to manage the netbooks in your deployment. And - in the event of theft - Computrace for Netbooks can help you recover your netbook.

How It Works

Through our partnership with leading netbook manufacturers, our Computrace Agent was embedded in the firmware of many netbooks at the factory. Or you can easily install it yourself. The Agent in the firmware is incredibly persistent and allows your netbooks to maintain a connection with our Monitoring Center, even if the hard drive is completely reformatted or replaced. Once the Agent is activated - your netbooks (and everything on them) are protected.

IT Asset Management

Manage all of your electronic assets with the ease of a single interface (regardless if a device is on or off your LAN) within the Absolute Customer Center. Monitor changes in asset information including user identification, physical location, and the installation of software/hardware that may not comply with government and corporate regulations. Computrace for Netbooks includes basic reporting capabilities.

Theft Recovery

If your netbook is stolen, the Absolute Theft Recovery team will work with local police to locate it and return it to you. Computrace for Netbooks provides up to five hours of dedicated theft recovery services.

Netbook Category

A netbook typically has a screen that is less than 10 inches wide diagonally, carries no optical drive, and runs on Intel Corp's Atom processor. Most employ either Microsoft Corp's Windows XP operating system or a version of open-source Linux-based software. Most weigh around 3 pounds or less.

The netbook market is constantly expanding. To understand if your device falls within this category, speak to your Absolute sales representative.

Laptop Takes World Tour, Calls Home Often
A laptop reported stolen from a student in New Jersey in October 2005, called in to Absolute’s Monitoring Center five days later from Hong Kong. Shortly thereafter, the laptop began calling in from England, then Dubai, then England again, and next from a hotel in Florida. When the laptop popped up in Massachusetts the next day, state police apprehended an astonished Hong Kong businessman who had bought the computer through an online auction service. A detective who helped crack the case sums it up: "I don't think I'd ever want you guys chasing me."

Police Use Computrace-Enabled Laptop in Sting Operation
